Oh, I thought you were calling me! Yes, I remember Matilda Kisch very clearly. She is the reason I became a teacher.

My Kindergarten teacher was a young woman who we kids called Miss Sonia. I never knew her last name. After Kindergarten we got stuck with mean old scary nuns!

I had Mrs. Blackman. She was probably in her 40s and was a very patient woman. I drove her crazy though. I was shy and so they thought I wasn't ready to read because I wouldn't talk when they did the initial evaluation. After a couple of weeks they realized I could already read and had to send me to the 1st grade classroom for reading (where they determined I was already reading at a 2nd/3rd grade level).
I was at "grade level" for everything else but reading I was too far ahead and she spent a lot of time keeping me engaged.

I never knew a Matilda. The only Matilda I'm familiar with is the one Harry Belafonte sang about - the one who took his money and run Venezuela. . If you weren't so young, I'd say your teacher was born when that song was popular and her mom named her after the song. Hmmm. Could still be possible . That was about 1958. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfA7GAyP6KkSaveSaveSaveSave
